Application of Leslie's model on a population of common dolphins (Delphinus delphis): Sensitivity study ArchiMer
Fifas, Spyros; Goujon, Michel; Antoine, Loic.
The rapid development of the albacore tuna (Thunnus alalunga) driftnet fishery in the Pay of Biscay (Atlantic ocean, France) has incited European management authorities to ask for a study of its ecological impact on populations of common dolphins and striped dolphins. A programme with onboard observers has been led during 1992 and 1993, and a sighting survey has allowed the evaluation of the abundances of fractions of populations in the studied area. For the population of common dolphins, the biological parameter estimation has allowed the building of a discrete age-structured model based on a Leslie matrix. Sensitivity studies have been conducted using four model parameters (age of first reproduction, interval between births, juvenile and adult survival...

Detection of Somaclonal Variation in Micropropagated and Acclimatized Plantlets of Oryza sativa MRQ 74 from Stem Explants Planta Daninha
SALEH,A.; TAHA,R.M.; MAHMAD,N.; ELIAS,H.; HAMID,H.A.A..
ABSTRACT: In plant tissue culture system, the excessive supply of plant growth hormones may inhibit further growth and development of the regenerants and sometimes it may induce somaclonal variation. In this study, the optimum concentration of plant growth hormones for in vitro regeneration of Oryza sativa L. cv. MRQ 74 was identified and subsequently the occurrence of somaclonal variation of regenerated plantlets was determined through cytological analysis of in vivo and in vitro grown plantlets. MS media supplemented with 0.1 mg L-1 BAP in combination with 0.1 mg L-1 NAA was found to be the optimum concentration for shoots and roots induction of Oryza sativa L. cv. MRQ 74. Plantlets derived from MS media supplemented with 0.5 mg L-1 2,4-D showed higher...

Effects of tea on survival rates and liver pathology of Trypanosoma brucei brucei infected mice OAK
Mbuthia, S.K; Wachira, N.W; Ngure, R.M; Ouma, J; Kagira, J.M.
The current study investigated the effects of different types of Kenyan tea extracts on the pathogenesis of Trypanosoma brucei brucei in a Swiss White mice model. Following infection with trypanosomes, the mice were monitored for survival and liver pathology. Tea significantly (P<0.05) enhanced the survival rate of tea treated mice. Additionally, in tea treated but infected mice, there was reduction in infiltration of inflammatory cells into the periportal and parenchymal regions as well as hepatocyte cell damage compared to the infected untreated animals. Green and white teas were superior in most of the above effects while black tea and oolong teas had the least effects. The tea extracts were more efficacious than dexamethasone in prolonging the life...

Exposure to 50-Hz electric fields on stress response initiated by infection with the protozoan parasite, Toxoplasma gondii, in mice OAK
Hori, Takuya; Harakawa, Shinji; Inoue, Noboru; Nagasawa, Hideyuki; Kariya, Tatsuya.
The present study was aimed to examine whether a 50-Hz electric field (EF) affects biological stress responses. Male C57BL/6J mice were exposed to either 50-Hz EF (45 kV/m) or given a sham exposure for 30 minutes per day for 1, 2 or 4 weeks and then either mock inoculated or inoculated with the protozoan parasite, Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) PLK strain. Survival rate was calculated in mice infected with T. gondii after exposure to EF and the serum antibody levels to heat shock protein 60 (Hsp-60), and mRNA levels for Hsp-60, IFN-γ and IL-12p35 in mouse peripheral leucocytes were determined. As a result, no statistically significant difference was found in survival rate between mice exposed to EF and those in the sham exposure group. When mice were...

Is artificial habitat diversity a key to restoring nurseries for juvenile coastal fish? Ex situ experiments on habitat selection and survival of juvenile seabreams ArchiMer
Mercader, Manon; Blazy, Christophe; Di Pane, Julien; Devissi, Camille; Mercière, Alexandre; Cheminée, Adrien; Thiriet, Pierre; Pastor, Jérémy; Crec'Hriou, Romain; Verdoit-‐jarraya, Marion; Lenfant, Philippe.
Man‐made infrastructures have become ubiquitous components of coastal landscapes, leading to habitat modification that affects the abundance and diversity of marine organisms. Marine coastal fish have a complex life cycle requiring different essential habitats. One of these habitats is known as a nursery, a place where juveniles can settle in large numbers, survive, and grow to contribute to the adult population. Nurseries are mainly found in shallow, sheltered zones and are thus particularly impacted by urbanization, notably by harbors. The vertical featureless structure of docks is very unlikely to be used by juveniles, which need complex habitats to find food and shelter from predators. Recent attempts to rehabilitate the nursery function in such...

Locomotion and survival of two sympatric larval anurans, Bufo gargarizans (Anura: Bufonidae) and Rana zhenhaiensis (Anura: Ranidae), after partial tail loss Rev. Bras. Zool.
Ding,Guo-Hua; Lin,Zhi-Hua; Zhao,Li-Hua.
Tadpoles of two sympatric anurans, Bufo gargarizans Cantor, 1842 and Rana zhenhaiensis Ye, Fei & Matsui, 1995, were used as model organisms to examine the effects of different levels of tail loss on swimming performance and survival. On average, B. gargarizans tadpoles were shorter and had smaller tails and body mass than R. zhenhaiensis. After 75% tail loss, the survival rate of experimental and control B. gargarizans tadpoles, and of experimental tadpoles of the two species, differed significantly; the number of tadpoles surviving a complete impairment of their swimming ability did not differ between B. gargarizans and R. zhenhaiensis. After 50% tail loss, the swimming performance (swimming speed, maximum distance and number of stops) of the two...

The development of a saline tolerant tilapia strain able to grow fast is of importance in the Philippines, where 240 000 ha of brackish water ponds are available. To this end, founder hybridization between Oreochromis niloticus (with favorable growth traits) and O. mossambicus (with favorable salinity tolerance traits) was performed and followed by backcrossing with O. mossambicus to develop a strain highly tolerant to saline environments. Genetic selection for growth performance was subsequently conducted. The aim of the present study was to estimate growth performance and survival of the hybrid in two rearing environments following four generations of genetic selection. A comparison between the hybrid and an internal reference line was performed in two...

The effect of discards and survival rate on the Maximum Sustainable Yield estimation based on landings or catches maximisation: Application to the nephrops fishery in the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Guillen, Jordi; Macher, Claire; Merzereaud, Mathieu; Fifas, Spyros; Guyader, Olivier.
MSY objectives are being adopted as major fisheries management targets worldwide. However, in fisheries where discards account for an important share of the catches, the yield, effort, and biomass at MSY can be significantly different when accounting or not for discards and thus when, basing the yield estimations on landings or catches. Also whether accounting for a certain survival rate, of discards can lead to different MSY targets estimates. Hence, both decisions have important, implications on catch and effort reduction recommendations, and consequently on the quota, calculations for fisheries managed by quotas. Results from the Bay of Biscay nephrops fishery confirm, that the optimal exploitation level can vary significantly when optimising for...

Влияние температуры воды на выживание молоди и формирование промыслового запаса черноморского шпрота Sprattus sprattus phalericus (Risso) (Pisces: Clupeidae) IBSS Repository
Зуев, Г. В.; Репетин, Л. Н.; Гуцал, Д. К.; Мельникова, Е. Б.; Пустоварова, Н. И..
